Kasparov was coaching Carlsen for a while, way back, but Carlsen ended up firing Kasparov and it's widely suspected that it was because they simply couldn't stand working together. They both have big egos and very different philosophies when it comes to chess (Kasparov being a product of the Soviet school of chess). 1.
The next best active player born in 1963 or earlier is 106th in the world and 200 points worse than Carlsen, Michal Krasenkow. He was never Kasparov, obviously, but he did crack the top 10 in 2000. Karpov, Kasparov's old nemesis, fell out of the top 20 at age 51, still playing actively.

Magnus Carlsen is better than Garry Kasparov. He got his grandmaster title at the young age of 13 and tied Kasparov as world champion at age 22. Carlsen reached the 2800 mark at 18 and later achieved the highest rating ever 2882. Kasparov has better longevity, but Carlsen has too many accolades.
